Der Lehrstuhl für Circular Economy and Sustainability Assessment am TUM Campus Straubing für Biotechnologie und Nachhaltigkeit trägt durch Ansätze der Bioökonomie und Circular Economy zur Transformation hin zu einer nachhaltigen Industrie und Gesellschaft bei. Unser Fokus liegt auf der Entwicklung quantitativer Methoden zur Modellierung, Bewertung und Optimierung bioökonomischer und zirkulärer Systeme.
Zur Verstärkung unseres Teams suchen wir zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt eine/n
Wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/in / Doktorand/in (m/w/d) – Circular Economy und nachhaltige Innovationsprozesse
Ihre Aufgaben Sie bearbeiten interdisziplinäre und anwendungsorientierte Forschungsprojekte zur Gestaltung und Umsetzung zirkulärer Innovationsprozesse in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Industrieunternehmen.
Ziel Ihrer Forschung ist die Entwicklung wissenschaftlich fundierter aber praxisnaher Ansätze, um Unternehmen bei der Transformation hin zu zirkulären Produkten, Dienstleistungen und Geschäftsmodellen zu unterstützen.
Zu Ihren Aufgaben gehören insbesondere:
- Entwicklung und Bearbeitung wissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen an der Schnittstelle von Circular Economy, nachhaltiger Innovation und Transformationsforschung
- Erforschung der Integration technologischer Innovationen, zirkulärer Produktgestaltung und nachhaltiger Geschäftsmodelle
- Entwicklung und Anwendung von Methoden zur Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung und Entscheidungsunterstützung
- Entwicklung und Validierung praxisnaher Werkzeuge, Methoden und Indikatorensysteme für zirkuläre Innovationsprozesse
- Durchführung von Innovationsprojekten, Workshops und Fallstudien gemeinsam mit Industriepartnern
- Pilotierung der entwickelten Ansätze in reale betriebliche Innovations- und Entwicklungsprozesse
Ihr Profil
Sie verfügen über einen sehr guten Hochschulabschluss (Master) in Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen, Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement oder einer verwandten Fachrichtung.
- Darüber hinaus bringen Sie idealerweise folgende Eigenschaften und Qualifikationen mit:
- Analytisches Denkvermögen sowie eine strukturierte und lösungsorientierte Arbeitsweise
- Motivation für eigenständige wissenschaftliche Arbeit in internationalen und interdisziplinären Teams
- Kreativität, Eigeninitiative und Engagement
- Idealerweise Vorkenntnisse in einem oder mehreren der folgenden Bereiche:
- Circular Economy
- Innovationsmanagement und Transformationsprozesse
- Nachhaltige Geschäftsmodelle
- Nachhaltigkeitsbewertung
- Interesse daran, aktiv zur langfristigen Entwicklung des Lehrstuhls beizutragen
- Freude an der Zusammenarbeit mit Praxispartnern und der Bearbeitung realer Transformationsprojekte
- Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift

The Chair of Circular Economy and Sustainability Assessment at TUM’s Straubing Campus for Biotechnology and Sustainability contributes to the transformation toward a sustainable industry and society through approaches based on the bioeconomy and the circular economy. Our focus is on developing quantitative methods for modeling, evaluating, and optimizing bioeconomic and circular systems.
To strengthen our team, we are seeking, as soon as possible, a
Research Associate as a Ph.D. Candidate or Postdoc (m/f/d) – Prospective Sustainability Assessment of Emerging Technologies with New Digital Tools
Your Responsibilities
You will work on interdisciplinary and application-oriented research projects focused on the prospective sustainability assessment of emerging technologies in close collaboration with national and international research institutions, and you will share your knowledge with students in courses.
The goal of your research is to develop scientifically sound yet practical approaches to support companies in their transformation toward circular products, services, and business models.
Your responsibilities will include, in particular:
- Developing and addressing scientific research questions related to the prospective sustainability assessment of new technologies, particularly regarding the material use of energy and CO₂ in food production
- Further developing methods and tools for sustainability assessment using new digital tools (particularly machine learning, large language models, and data mining)
- Integrating sustainability assessments to support decision-making in operational innovation projects, workshops, and case studies in collaboration with industry partners
- Applying your knowledge in teaching
Your Profile
You hold an excellent master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, Sustainability Management, or a related field.
In addition, you ideally possess the following qualities and qualifications:
- Analytical thinking skills and a structured, solution-oriented approach to work
- Motivation for independent research work in international and interdisciplinary teams
- Creativity, initiative, and commitment
- Technical and methodological knowledge in:
- Prospective Life Cycle Assessment
- Techno-economic Assessment
- Social Life Cycle Assessment
- Common software systems for sustainability assessment, particularly Brightway2 and Ecoinvent
- Programming skills
- AI approaches, methods, and tools related to machine learning, large language models, and data mining
- Interest in actively contributing to the long-term development of the department
- Enjoyment of collaborating with industry partners and working on real-world transformation projects
- Excellent written and spoken English skills

- Duration: 3 - 6 months
- Start: 01 October 2026
Tasks
- Preparation and revision of lecture notes of the modules “Sustainable Production” and “LCA Lab”
- Integration of further digital, interactive elements in the modules
- Support in project work, such as statistical data analysis, report writing etc.
- Support with our CirculaTUM network, e.g. event organization, member administration, LinkedIn posts etc.
- Skills and qualifications needed
- Confident use of MS Office software (especially PowerPoint) and Canva
- Expertise in the professional design and formatting of presentations, reports and other communication materials
- Good self-organizational and time management skills, quick perception
- Reliable work attitude, high degree of responsibility, flexibility and ability to work in a team
- Careful, conscientious and independent way of working
- Remote work partially possible, on-site presence in Straubing partially required
- High level of English proficiency, German level of at least B2
